List of sites where other filmmakers have found suitably licensed music:

Note: Some charge a small fee for particular licenses, others have free music available. A commercial license is the most wide ranging in terms of rights to use, but most non-commercial licenses will be enough. If in doubt ask a site administrator, or mail a musician directly. Many independent music creators are willing to issue suitable licenses, if their general license isn’t right for you (e.g. for creative commons, ‘no derivative works’ includes filmmaking, but often creators add that clause simply to prevent mashups being made from their work, and are open to having their work used as a film score when asked). We don’t have legal training, and copyright is a bit of a minefield, but remember, most of the time, when in doubt, asking the musicians directly will cover most things (so long as the musicians themselves have the rights to their own music). Please write to Expo Staff if you can add any suitable sites to this list.

Jamendo : Huge site, music can be sorted by license and is free to download. The ‘attribution only’ license covers you for anything, up to and including Hollywood blockbuster, though site admins request that if you are making money from your work to please buy a pro license to support the musicians on site.

Magnatune : ‘We are not evil’ reads their tagline. Profit sharing site. Licenses are easy and quick to obtain and they claim ‘hassle free’. Used by well known pro machinimators for convenience and choice.

Machinimasound : Created by Per and Jens Kiilstofte, offering made-for-score music with pretty much zero restrictions and a specific machinima emphasis. See faqs here
